Pre Season Tour
The Strachan Football Foundation embarked on their first pre season tour this summer and the trip was a great success. 25 players and staff travelled to Scotland on Saturday 21st July for a weeks training and games . The squad were based at the Village hotel in Edinburgh with usage of the state of the art gym and spa facilities.
The tour took in two training sessions at Scotlands national training centre” The Oriam ” next to the Heart of Midlothian first team, and also at the Spartans community club 4g pitch. Games were played against Falkirk reserves at the Alloa Athletic stadium and against Hibernian u19’s at the Hibernian training ground. Both first team managers attended the games, Paul Hartley – Falkirk and Neil Lennon – Hibs.
In both games the students performed very well and although they lost both games 5-2 the level of performance was excellent. A number of players attracted attention of the opposition coaches and Hibernian manager Neil Lennon was very complimentary of the standard and application of all players.
The tour also took in games between Spartans and Kilmarnock in the league cup, Europa league tie between Hibernian and AOK and one of the highlights of the week between Celtic v Rosenberg in the Champions League.
Edinburgh was a buzzing city with the start of the fringe festival and the good weather that was had. The students took in trips to the Forth Road Bridge, Edinburgh castle and other landmarks in the city centre.
The trip attracted a lot of attention in the Scottish media due to the foundations aims for local students and why it is running and this has prompted interest in running similar programmes up in Scotland. Well done to all the students that took part on the trip and we look forward to next years pre season tour.
