Midland Floodlit Youth League Cup

Rugby Town JFC under 18’s took on Nuneaton Griff who currently sit 2nd place in the Midland Floodlit Youth League Eastern division. The 4th round league tie provided both teams with an opportunity to progress into the 1/4 Finals of the league cup.

Rugby started brightly with the midfield trio of Gabe Barnwell , Nic Brandish and Alex Webb taking control of the game immediately they were aggressive when pressuring the opposition in possession and composed when in possession of the football. Callum Jones fired wide within the first minute of the game after a great run from left back.

Early chances were created with Callum Jones who fired wide within the first minute of the game after a great run from left back. Rugby number 9 Sam Lockley also went close with a glancing header and Harry Sawyer fired wide with a driven shot from the edge of the box.

Rugby front 3 of Cam’ron Barrett , Sam Lockley and Harry Sawyer were a constant threat and were very effective throughout the game. Cam’ron Barrett put in his finest display in a Rugby Town shirt, his movement , confidence and pace of attacks were a delight to watch. The work rate out of possession of all 3 front men set the tone for the evening as Rugby didn’t allow Nuneaton Griff to settle on the ball making it very hard for Griff to get a foothold in the game.

Rugby opened the scoring when Callum Jones slid Sam Lockley through he rounded the keeper who made Lockley go very wide and have to cross in the box right from the Griff touchline which deflected off a Griff defender to make it 1-0 to Rugby.

Birthday boy Ethan Flaig put in a performance of confidence and maturity from centre half leading the defensive line very well, his passing was of the highest order and was the catalyst for many of Rugby’s attacks.

Rugby continued to dominate possession within the first half, making it very difficult for Griff in possession moving the ball with good tempo which made the Griff work extremely hard out of possession.

Rugby Town JFC 1 – 0 Nuneaton Griff

The 2nd half started with a stiffer challenge from a spirited Griff side, they did work harder and tried to make it more difficult for Rugby to pass the football, this in turn created more space for Rugby to play behind the pressure of the Griff players which resulted in a 2nd half of numerous Rugby chances.

Sam Lockley went close driving the ball just wide of the left hand post and also saw Nic Brandish fire a shot from the edge of the box. On 60 minutes Rugby management team of Elliott and Thompson made two changes and a change of shape. Remae James joined Sam Lockley up front replacing the hard working Harry Sawyer and Danny Bowes replaced Callum Jones at left back.

The changing of the shape almost paid off immediately when James went close from 12 yards out. It wasn’t long until Rugby doubled their lead through the prolific Sam Lockley, he received the ball on his right foot 14 yards out and powerfully drove the against the inside of the post and the ball hit the back of the net.

Rugby Town JFC 2 – 0 Nuneaton Griff.

10 minutes after the 2nd goal Rugby extended their lead further when Cam’rom Barrett slid Remae James in on the right side of the edge of the box, Remae made no mistake and powerfully drove the ball low into the bottom left of the Griff net.

Rugby Town JFC 3 – 0 Nuneaton Griff

Rugby continued to dominate possession and play some wonderful passing football, as the hardworking Griff team tired Rugby took their game to another level and the last 20 minutes of the game saw wave after wave of Rugby attacks. The final goal came from the impressive Nic Brandish who put in a combative commanding performance in central midfield, Nic received the ball 5 yards outside of the Griff box and struck a sweet shot which took a slight deflection which helped the ball over Griff goalkeeper.

A display of the highest order from a confident Rugby team, some very special individual performances from Ethan Flaig , Cam’ron Barrett and Nic Brandish
