Rugby Town JFC U18’s v Rugby Town FC U18’s
Midland Youth Floodlit League
12th December 2016
It was derby day at Kilsby Lane, where Rugby Town FC may the short journey from Butlin Road to Kilsby Lane, Rugby Town Juniors looked to continue their free scoring form to be top of the table at the christmas break. Rugby were looking to bounce back from a 3-0 loss to high flying Alvechurch last week. A decent crowd attended the fantastic Kilsby Lane facility and were hoping for a christmas cracker.
Juniors kicked off and within 90 seconds opened the scoring when Nic Brandish played into the back foot of Harry Sawyer who turned and hit a left footed shot outside of the post which curled inside the left hand post. A positive start from Juniors who started the game very brightly which led to Juniors extending their lead on 5 minutes, Sam Lockley linked up with Cam’ron Barrett who then crossed the ball across the face of the Rugby goal and it was Harry Sawyer who placed the ball home at the back post to make it 2-0. Juniors began to get into their stride and began to dominate possession and showed patience in how they attacked controlling the opening 15 minutes.
Rugby Town FC didn’t just lay down, they had spirit and honest endeavour in their approach to the game. They did have some opportunities which were from individual efforts from the hardworking front man Charlie Whiteside but the Juniors defence stood strong against his strength and pace. Juniors continued to play in their familiar passing style and showed a good understanding of when to pass and when to delay the pass. Rugby Town FC did make it difficult for Juniors dropping off and inviting them to try and play through them by having 10 men behind the ball, the clever movement and confidence in receiving the ball in tight areas allowed Juniors to create chances but were thwarted by the impressive Rugby goalkeeper Bodycott.
Regular chances were created by the Juniors but they were unable to add to their lead until the 37th minute when Cam’ron Barrett received a pull back from the advanced full back Danny Bowes, Cam’ron took one touch and drilled a left footed shot across the keeper and into the bottom right hand corner of the net to make the score 3-0. A couple more half chances for Juniors were not converted and the teams went in at half time with juniors with a 3 goal advantage.
The 2nd half continued in the same vein as the first half with Juniors dominating possession and being strong and organised at the back, the in form Ethan Flaig led the Juniors back line with maturity and dominated the aerial battle against Whiteside, Flaig’s recent change of form has seen him become a leader with maturity and high levels of communication throughout games. A string of corners gave Juniors the opportunity to extend their lead but were unable to convert their dominance into goals until Cam’ron Barrett collected the ball 25 yards out with a confident first touch Barrett smashed an unstoppable pile driver into the top left hand corner of the net making the score 4-0.
Rugby Town FC’s did become a little frustrated with the Juniors possession based style of play and found it hard to press and gain possession of the football, On the 61 minutes the prolific Sam Lockley made the score 5-0 after a intelligent run and a composed finish past the unfortunate Bodycott in the Rugby goal. This resulted in 5 subs entering the game , James replaced Lockley , McClintock for Webb, Bartrum for Gamble , Badu for Brandish and Jones for Barrett, the introduction of the subs did not effect the flow of the game and they all adjusted to the pace of the game very quickly with chances created but not converted into goals keeping the score at 5-0 at full time.
An entertaining game of football highlighting that Rugby as a town has some real talent, lets hope we see the lads involved continuing to progress in the game and hopefully making appearances for the Rugby Town FC first team up at Butlin Road.
